Upcycling Display Cabinets with Paint & Paper

Transform outdated pieces into chic showstoppers with these easy DIY ideas

Display cabinets are often overlooked treasures—whether inherited, thrifted, or found curbside. With a little love, some Country Chic Paint, and creative flair, you can turn a dated cabinet into a beautiful, functional centerpiece for your home. In this guide, we’ll walk you through step-by-step ideas to breathe new life into these classic pieces using paint, stencils, wallpaper, and hardware swaps.

Step 1: Prep Your Piece

Before you dive into color and creativity, proper prep is key.

Here's how:

  • Clean thoroughly using a degreaser or mild soap to remove dirt and grime.
  • Remove all hardware, glass panels, and doors if possible. Label screws and hinges so reassembly is easy. If you can't remove the glass panels be sure to use painters tape to avoid getting paint on any glass portions of your piece (if you do... you can scrape it off, but it can be a pain!)
  • Sand lightly to scuff the surface and help paint adhere, especially if the piece has a glossy finish.
  • Wipe down with a damp cloth to remove dust.

💡 Tip: For glossy or laminate finishes, use our Clear Bonding Primer to ensure maximum adhesion.

Step 2: Paint It Beautiful

Choose a Country Chic Paint color that matches your style—whether it’s vintage farmhouse, modern boho, or French country. Our  paint glides on smoothly and offers stunning coverage.

Painting Steps:

  • Apply 1–2 coats of paint using a high-quality synthetic brush like our Oval Brush or a Painting Sponge.
  • Let dry between coats (usually about 1–2 hours).
  • Lightly distress edges with sandpaper for a vintage look, if desired. This is very optional!
  • Seal with our all-natural Clear Coat for extra durability, especially on high-touch surfaces.

Popular colors for cabinets: Vanilla Frosting, Hollow Hill, Wanderess, and Jitterbug.

Step 3: Add Wallpaper or Decorative Paper

The inside of your cabinet is the perfect canvas for a pop of personality. Line the back panel with wallpaper, peel-and-stick paper, or even wrapping paper for an eye-catching surprise.

How-to:

  • Measure the interior panels and cut your paper to size.
  • Use wallpaper paste or double-sided tape to secure it.
  • Smooth out air bubbles with a plastic scraper or credit card.
  • Let dry completely before reassembling the cabinet.

💡 Pro tip: Choose patterns that complement your paint color for a cohesive look.

Step 4: Stencil Some Style

Stencils add texture and interest without overwhelming the piece. Try adding a stenciled floral motif to the cabinet doors or geometric accents to the drawers.

Quick stencil tutorial:

  • Secure the stencil with painter’s tape.
  • Use a stencil brush or sponge with very little paint (dab off excess!).
  • Apply with a light tapping motion.
  • Carefully lift the stencil and let dry.

Step 5: Swap the Hardware

Old hardware can date a piece instantly. Refresh the look with modern knobs or vintage-inspired pulls.

  • Try brass, matte black, or ceramic styles depending on your look.
  • Center new hardware using a measuring tape and a drill template for perfect alignment.

🛠️ Bonus idea: Use Clear Bonding Primer and Paint the existing hardware with our paint for a budget-friendly upgrade!
